Do 36 states currently have some sort of voter ID law in effect?

YES

Thirty-six states have laws requesting or requiring voters to show some form of identification at the polls. Ten of those states have strict photo ID requirements, which necessitate photo identification to cast a ballot. That includes Nebraska, which passed a ballot measure on the subject in November 2022.

Three states have strict non-photo ID requirements, and accept non-photo identification such as documents with a name and address.

Ten states request photo identification, but voters are able to cast their vote without one.

Thirteen states request some form of identification (photo identification not required) but voters are still able to cast their vote without it.

Only fourteen states do not require any documentation to cast a ballot. Nevada is currently one of them.
